We’re out here
Honolulu, Hawaii (dateline to make you jealous) — While looking at The Big Lead as I do every morning, I saw a link with the comment, “where are all the college bloggers at.”
Obviously I took an interest.
Because UT was all about the technology and journalism, it never occurred to me that other schools might not be encouraging their journalism students to learn how to blog.
The blog, bydanielvictor.com, talked about just a few of the ones he knows about. But there have to be more, right? In one of my classes a few months ago, there were four that we had to do for a grade, and many of us ran our own outside of that.
I really hope that more schools are teaching their J students how to blog. If not, we’re never going to get out of this bad state of affairs when it comes to the news industry.
Until then, though, looks like I’ll have an edge.
No lie, I was excited to hear that other schools are lagging on blogging. My reasons are selfish and two-fold.
1. It means I’m better prepared than a lot of j-school grads.
2. It means UT’s j–school probably truly is top-notch, just like I’ve always let myself believe.

You selfish sonofabitch, lol. Nah, can’t say that didn’t cross my mind too. At our commencement I really just thought they were kissing Lorenne’s ass with all that stuff. Looks like I was wrong.
But really, in the grand scheme of the news industry, this news kind of sucks.

Thanks for the comments and link, Ricky.
My blogging education came 100 percent away from the classroom — granted, I graduated in the dark ages of 2006, but now any self-respecting journalism student or graduate ought to have something resembling your blog.
I went to Penn State, which had a fantastic faculty and gave me a great education for print, but still hasn’t really figured out this Internet stuff. It’s nice to see UT is being proactive on it.

Yeah, I think within two years time every J-school grad will know how to run a blog and build/connect with an audience. UT finally put into place this year a multimedia journalism path to go alongside print and broadcast.
